And although we complain concerning the dreaded cuts all through the Arts, there is in actuality very an awesome offer available to hold out which you won't should founded your hand within your pocket after for. A fellow bargain-hunter and I adopted the properlylinks of london Necklace trodden art-student trail near to the 100 % free middle London galleries. I would provide you with directions, however it is most in all likelihood drastically better just to founded the postcodes belonging in the direction of galleries into your iphones – I usually inform people nowadays to go left when genuinely it is right…

Start in Golden rectangular after which mind into Frith street Gallery. on the moment in time they are displaying their summer time exhibition (until the 28th August): pursuing the Volcano: A summer time show of Gallery Artists.

Two pieces inside the soil ground are especially worth seeing (maybe even if it wasn’t free&#8230 Massimo Bartolini’s Revolutionary Monk and Dayanita Singh’s assortment of photos entitled desire Villas. Bartolini’s bronze statue of the Buddhist monk is positioned on the plinth all through the center belonging in the direction of very first space and is also revolving at an alarming speed. So quickly that it cannot be reflective belonging in the direction of meditative connect you presume the monk to inhabit but quickly enough which you can be found throughout your do it yourself totally entranced – a connect that is in actuality a trademark belonging in the direction of artist. Tear your do it yourself away, for individuals who can, and mind in to the next room. It is totally pitch dark bar the lighting all through the projector. And what lighting it is. The color in Singh’s desire Villa is so intense and vibrant that is almost as entrancing since the Monk. desire Villa (2008) is Singh’s very first assortment totally in color and explores a unidentified earth of in india at night. Her utilization of moonlight and artificial lighting expose the several states of objects, structures and people nowadays at night.

We moved on to Riflemaker on Beak street to ascertain Leah Gordon’s The Invisibles – a assortment of photos from her extensive travels to Haiti. The images, exclusively in dark and white, are so dramatic and theatrical which they almost appear as well huge for the tiny front-room design of Riflemaker’s soil ground space. But this immediately renders them additional intimate. It is reflective of Gordon wanting to explore the restrictions of art, religion and anthropology. So pieces like dark Madonna that explore Catholicism in Haiti are juxtaposed with those people from her guide Karnaval. pictures belonging in the direction of Madonna looming all through the clouds are up coming to devilish pictures of youthful boys in body-suits and chains near to their wrists, or horns on their heads, or cardboard facemasks and placards that look at ‘JUDGE’Then for only a tiny walk, we headed to Haunch of Venison. But! to acquire to Haunch you pass by Marshall street and there they have among probably the most effective 100 % free issues this thirty day period – a ping pong parlour. It is in actuality links of london Ring a pop-up parlour that is element of Ping!London and all through the creators of last year’s street Piano scheme. They have tables which means you can hold out collectively with your friends/strangers/people who purpose there, or, if nobody will hold out with you, you can hold out versus the window – but then people nowadays outside will consider photos of you.

Haunch of Venison has two superb solo exhibitions on on the moment: Polly Morgan’s very first solo at Haunch, Psychopomps, and Joana Vasconcelos’ I Will Survive. Psychopomps is 4 suspended taxidermy sculptures which could be poised in between metamorphosis and flight. dark Fever and Blue Fever are abstracted composites – one produced from wings of crows as well as another from pigeons. the two are astonishingly melancholy, stuck mid-flight, but somehow they are strangely beautiful. So as well will be the finches that hold their heavy cages. Taxidermy appears to turn into astonishingly en vogue – it absolutely was downstairs at Riflemaker as well and my buddy was placing on a reduced mandible necklace.

I Will Survive is equally surreal, feminine and beautiful. Vasconcelos explores nationality and gender – especially womanhood – by utilizing a great repertoire of mediums. Crochet, traditionally a feminine craft, handles ceramic lobsters, horse heads, pianos and statuesque mannequins. It gets sexualised and restrictive – suffocating its prey. almost everything should turn into links of london Necklace looked at twice on this exhibition on account of the actuality you will not have confidence in your very first interpretation. specifically all through the ironically named Passerelle (Catwalk): precisely where ceramic puppies are suspended from the rotating conveyor belt. They crash into every solo other in an extremely sonorous cacophony of destruction. Limbs and tails type a pile beneath them. Actually, it genuinely is very funny– most belonging in the direction of pieces are astonishingly witty. Even in Esposas precisely where three foam wives are sitting inside the ground with their legs splayed, tied to their husbands with dark plastic material ties, the vacant expression belonging in the direction of husbands can render a wry grin.

HA NOI — Now that China has taken over from Japan as the world's second ranking economic power, experts see opportunities for small economies, such as Viet Nam's, to take more foreign outsourcing orders.
They predict that China will accept less outsourc-ing in industries using large numbers of workers, such as garments and pandora Silver Beads textiles, and boost production of products with high added value.
The low production-cost advantages it now offers are expected to fade as wages and the cost of materials increase.
Diep Thanh Kiet, deputy president of the Viet Nam Leather and Footwear Association, said Viet Nam's cheap labour costs would enable it to take large orders in garments and textiles, leather and footwear - and furniture.
Viet Nam's garment and textile exports to South Korea increased 80 per cent thanks to tax reductions under the ASEAN-RoK Free Trade Agreement. Meanwhile, the Viet Nam-Japan Economic and Trade Agreement has helped boost Viet Nam's garment and textile exports to Japan by 15 per cent over the same period last year.
In the first eight months of this year, Viet Nam earned nearly US$6.9 billion from garment and textile exports.
Kiet said many customers selected Vietnamese instead of Chinese footwear because the quality was higher and prices lower.
In the first seven months of this year, Viet Nam had an export turnover of more than $2.75 billion in footwear, a year-on-year increase of 13.8 per cent. Of this, almost $700 million was earned from the US.
However, Kiet said he was unsure if Vietnamese enterprises could accept much of the spin-off trade from China, which exports about 8 billion pairs of shoes a year.
He said if Viet Nam took just 10 per cent of this, the local footwear industry would have to double its production capacity.
The same would be true in the garment pandora Jewelry and textile sector. The sector would have to increase its capacity 2.5 times to receive 10 per cent of orders from China. In 2009, China exported $150 billion worth of garments and textiles, while Viet Nam exported $9.2 billion. To take advantage of the new situation, experts said Vietnamese industries must quickly overcome problems in human resources, materials and technology. — VNS

HA NOI — Domestic gold prices topped VND28.7 million yesterday. As a result many small investors rushed to sell gold. Meanwhile, commercial banks have entered the race to increase the price of US dollar.
Two days after the sudden increase in the value of the dollar, the domestic gold market also increased in value. Early pandora Jewelry yesterday morning, the gold price offered by Saigon Gold and Silver Company (SJC) on the HCM City bourse, stood at between VND28.65 million ($1,484) and 28.71 million ($1,487) per tael, up from VND150,000 to VND170,000 compared to Wednesday afternoon. The SJC gold price continued to spiral with gold prices reaching VND28.75 million ($1,489), while other jewellery shops in HCM City offered gold at around VND28.63 million per tael (purchase) and VND28.75 million per tael (sale).
In Ha Noi, gold traded by SJC agents at 11am stood at VND28.78 million, VND80,000 higher than the purchasing price. In Ha Noi, small traders rushed to sell their gold yesterday morning. The number of gold traders increased by 60 per cent compared to previous weeks, a representative of Bao Tin Minh Chau said.
Xuan Lan, a small trader said she decided to sell her gold yesterday despite predictions that the gold market would continue to see higher prices.
A Phu Nhuan Jewellery Company representative said as of 11am yesterday, his company had purchased 3,000 taels from pandora Silver Beads customers nationwide, up sharply compared with the dismal days of last week.
The increased gold price was attributed to the increased value of the dollar on the foreign currency markets. However, the foreign currency market had gradually stabilised, and the listed buying and selling prices of the US dollar had already hit ceiling prices. Therefore, gold prices were likely find it difficult to increase further. — VNS

Diplomacy remains the best way to defuse the Iranian nuclear standoff despite Saturday's resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency ...

Diplomacy remains the best way to defuse the Iranian nuclear standoff despite Saturday's resolution adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to report the issue to the UN Security Council, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday. 　GD761 "The Iranian nuclear issue should be properly resolved through negotiations," Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said at a regular news briefing. NF343 On Saturday, the IAEA Board of Governors voted 27 to 3 with five abstentions to approve a resolution drafted by the EU-3 (Germany, Britain and France) to request IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei to report the Iranian nuclear issue to the Security Council, which can impose sanctions. China voted for the IAEA resolution because it believed the resolution would encourage further talks. "This resolution is in accord with our basic principle that the authority and seriousness of the non-proliferation regime should be maintained," Kong said. 　p90x He added the resolution did not oblige the IAEA to refer Iran to the council. "There is still room for resolving the Iranian nuclear dispute within the framework of the IAEA," Kong said. "We hope the resolution helps resolve the stalemate as soon as possible." 　GK479 The UN nuclear watchdog is scheduled to meet again on March 6 to determine whether Iran has met the requirements set in the resolution reached at Saturday's meeting. In defiance of the vote, Iran on Monday officially notified the IAEA that it would resume full-scale uranium enrichment, ending a two-year freeze on such work. Teheran also said it would limit co-operation with nuclear inspectors to basic obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. "In this context, China calls on all parties to exercise restraint and patience and take positive action to create necessary conditions for addressing the issue," Kong said. On Monday, China's Ambassador to the United Nations Wang Guangya also called for a negotiated settlement between Iran and the European countries 　GW240 "China prefers to have the EU-3 continue negotiations with the Iranians to find a long-term solution to this issue," Wang said in New York. He added there is still time for the council to consider how to arrive at a proper solution by diplomatic means. 　turbo fire In Paris, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing reaffirmed yesterday that China hopes to solve the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomacy. "We hope to be able to find an adequate solution to this question through diplomacy in order to benefit peace and stability in the region," Li told reporters after meeting French President Jacques Chirac. The European Union may try to draw up a media code of conduct to avoid a repeat of the furor caused by the publication across Europe of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, an EU commissioner said on Thursday. In an interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph, EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini said the charter would encourage the media to show "prudence" Dell Inspiron 9400 batterywhen covering religion. "The press will give the Muslim world the message: We are aware of the consequences of exercising the right of free expression," he told the newspaper.
bbc dvd"We can and we are ready to self-regulate that right." The cartoons, which first appeared in a Danish newspaper last September before being reprinted across Europe, sparked a wave of protests around the world. Newspapers which have published them say they are exercising their right to freedom of speech, medium dvdwhile critics say the cartoons are deliberately offensive. Depicting the Prophet Mohammad is prohibited by Islam. Frattini, a former Italian foreign minister, said millions of Muslims in Europe felt "humiliated" by the cartoons. His proposed voluntary code would urge the media to respect all religious sensibilities but would not offer privileged status to any one faith. The code would be drawn up by the European Commission, the EU executive body, and European media outlets, he said. It would not have legal status. The EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana is to travel to Arab and Muslim countries in an attempt to calm the anger caused by the cartoons.turbo fire The U.N. probe into the murder of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri — in which four pro-Syrian generals and a lawmaker were named as suspects — has increased pressure on Syria by stoking suspicions that government members played a role in the killing, AP reported. The generals were questioned Wednesday, a day after they were detained or surrendered to authorities at the request of United Nations investigators trying to determine who was behind the Feb. star wars dvd 14 bombing that killed Hariri and 20 other people. A staunchly pro-Syrian former legislator was released Wednesday after he also was named as a suspect and returned from Syria for questioning. The recent developments led some to predict Washington would use the information to increase pressure on Syria, which the United States claims is supporting Islamic militants battling U.S. forces in Iraq and Palestinian militants in their fight with Israel. "The Lebanese arena will be used by those hostile to Syria to keep pressuring Syria," said Ibrahim Bayram, an analyst for the respected Beirut daily, An-Nahar. The Lebanese government detained Maj. Gen. Jamil Sayyed, former chief of the General Security department; Maj. Gen. Ali Hajj, former police chief, and Brig. Gen. Raymond Azar, former head of military intelligence.PC764 Presidential Guards Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Mustafa Hamdan, surrendered as did ex-legislator Nasser Qandil, who was released early Wednesday. As questioning continued Wednesday, U.N. investigators and Lebanese forensic experts visited two apartments south of Beirut that may have been used to plan the Hariri assassination, sons of anarchy dvdaccording to a Lebanese security official who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the case. The investigators searched the flats and lifted fingerprints. Lebanese police later detained at least four more people, including a man believed to own one of the apartments, the official said. FK890Hariri's death provoked massive protests that led to the April withdrawal of thousands of Syrian forces from Lebanon, ending a three-decade occupation, and the ouster of Lebanon's pro-Syrian government. Many Lebanese blamed Syria and its Lebanese allies, particularly members of the country's security apparatus, for the assassination. Both sides have denied the allegations.turbo fire There has been no official reaction from Damascus to the latest developments, but Syrian media, all state-run, reported the news, and editorials dismissed insinuations of a possible Syrian role as an attempt to discredit the country. "Misleading campaigns are continuing," said a front-page headline in Al-Thawra newspaper. Elias Murad, editor-in-chief of Al-Baath newspaper, said the Lebanese generals' closeness to Syria "is not strange as the vast majority of the Lebanese have good relations with Syria." The developments come at a difficult time for Syria. It has been under U.S. economic sanctions since before the assassination for not doing enough to curb the flow of militants across its border into Iraq. Shortly after Hariri's murder, Washington recalled its ambassador, Margaret Scobey, to protest the bombing. Since then, Syria has been in isolation. U4873No high-ranking Americans have visited. There has been no movement on a trade association agreement with the European Union that's crucial to the country's ailing economy. At a closed Security Council briefing Tuesday, Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari said "there has been no cooperation" from Syria in the investigation, according to U.S. deputy U.N. Ambassador Anne Patterson. Hurricane Katrina dumped sheets of rain, kicked up the surf and blew strong winds along the densely populated southeast coast of Florida, the USA, Thursday, killing two people shortly after it struck land, reported AP. Dell Inspiron 1525 batteryKatrina's maximum sustained winds increased to 80 mph before the Category 1 storm made landfall along the Miami-Dade and Broward county line between Hallandale Beach and North Miami Beach, said hurricane specialist Lixion Avila with the National Hurricane Center in Miami. An estimated 5.9 million Florida residents were in Katrina's projected path. It's like a ghost town out here," said Mark Darress, concierge at The Astor Hotel in Miami Beach, where the night time crowds generally clog the streets. "I see the random, not so smart people, riding scooters every now and then."i love lucy dvd A man in his 20s in Fort Lauderdale was crushed by a falling tree as he sat alone in his car, while a pedestrian was killed by a falling tree in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Plantation. Rain fell in horizontal sheets and blew gusts of up to 92 mph, toppling trees and street signs. Seas were estimated at 15 feet, and sand blew across and covered waterfront streets. Florida Power & Light said more than 412,000 customers were without electricity. Category 30 rock dvd1 storms have maximum sustained winds of 74 to 95 mph, and wind damage to secured structures is usually minimal. Weather officials said Katrina was mostly a rain event, with flooding the main concern. "In essence, this is a very dangerous storm. It's important to take this seriously," Gov. Jeb Bush said. As the storm took aim on the coast, flights were canceled p90xat Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports. The hurricane forced MTV to cancel or postpone some of the performances leading up to its award show, including festivities celebrating the release of Ricky Martin's new album. The show itself, planned for Sunday in Miami Beach, isn't expected to be affected. Floridians wary of Katrina prepared by putting up shutters, stacking sandbags in doorways and stocking up on supplies. At a supermarket in Hollywood, Cassandra Butler hefted two five-gallon bottles of water as well as a 24-pack of smaller bottles into her shopping cart Thursday. "It's not that I'm worried. I've been in south Florida all my life," Butler said. "But this is a feature of life down here, and you are smart to deal with it." leave it to beaver dvd At a Home Depot in Miami, Jose Guerrera, 68, loaded 4-by-8 sheets of plywood onto a metal cart. He and his family huddled in their Coral Gables home as Hurricane Andrew screamed by in 1993 and he has been boarding up the house during hurricanes ever since. "I have to protect the doors and windows," Guerrera said. His wife, meanwhile, was shopping for water and food. "That's her problem. She's Dell Inspiron 640m batterygotta take care of the food. I take care of the work." Water management officials lowered canal levels to avoid possible flooding, and pumps were activated in several low-lying areas of Miami-Dade. "I always prepare for hurricanes," said Icel Diaz, 29, a resident of the flood-prone city of Sweetwater in Miami-Dade, as she gathered some sandbags. "Sometimes I overprepare, buying too many supplies." Dozens of surfers and spectators lined beaches from Palm Beach to Miami-Dade counties to take advantage of the massive waves on the normally placid seas, and long lines didn't seem to be a problem at most area gas stations, supermarkets and hardware stores. "This is the best of both worlds because it'll bring great waves, but it is not at all dangerous,"Dell Inspiron 600m battery said surfer Kurt Johnston, 22, of Davie. Katrina was the second hurricane to hit the state this year — Dennis hit the Panhandle last month — and the sixth since Aug. 13, 2004. Katrina formed Wednesday over the Bahamas and was expected to cross Florida before heading into the Gulf of Mexico. After crossing the peninsula, the storm could turn to the north over the Gulf of Mexico and threaten the Panhandle early next week, forecasters said. Bush encouraged residents of Florida's Panhandle and Big Bend areas to monitor the storm. Katrina is the 11th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1. That's seven more than have typically formed by now in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, the hurricane center said. The season ends Nov. 30. Hamas warned Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on24 dvd Wednesday not to make changes in the government without consulting it — the first clear sign the Islamic militant group plans to play hardball as both sides begin to jockey for positions in the new leadership. Exiled political leader Khaled Mashaal reiterated that Hamas would not bow to Arab and international pressure to recognize IsraelDell Inspiron 1100 battery and that the group — once in power — would not act to prevent militant attacks on the Jewish state. Mashaal took the tough stance after three days of talks between Hamas leaders and Egyptian officials — the group's first diplomatic foray seeking Arab support since it scored a surprise victory in Palestinian elections on Jan. 25. Hoping to avert a collapse of the peace process, Egyptian officials had said ahead of the talks that they would urge Hamas to recognize Israel and build a coalition government with Abbas' more moderate Fatah party. But Mashaal, who is based in Damascus, house m.d. dvd and other Hamas leaders appeared confident in their strength, offering at most a continuation of the truce in anti-Israeli attacks that they called a year ago. The smaller militant group Islamic Jihad, meanwhile, declared it would forge ahead with attacks against Israel — signaling that even if Hamas eventually bows to pressure, other Palestinian radicals will not. Islamic Jihad has been responsible for all six suicide bombings since Palestinian factions agreed to a cease-fire a year ago. Mashaal said Hamas would not renounce violence or act to stop anti-Israeli attacks because it was obliged to resist what it regards as Israel's occupation of Palestinian land. "We will not stand against the resistance, we will not condemn any operation and will never arrest any mujahed (holy warrior)," he said. The Hamas leader told the British Broadcasting Corp. earlier Wednesday that a long-term cease-fire with Israel was possible if the Jewish state withdrew to its 1967 borders. In Washington, Israel's new foreign minister Tzipi Livni said during a visit that her country should not be bound by agreements to give a Hamas-led Palestinian TD347government customs duties and taxes it collects on the Palestinians because it considers the group terrorists. Israel has agreed to turn over about $50 million a month so long as the current caretaker government of Abbas remains in power. "We are talking about the Hamas, which is a designated terrorist organization," Livni said during a news conference with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.p90x "It's something unacceptable to demand Israel implement its role in these agreements while the other side doesn't even agree that we have the right to exist, simple as that." The United States has also branded Hamas a terrorist organization. Speaking at the same news conference, Rice said the international community led by the United States need to send a strong message to Hamas that terror is unacceptable and it must renounce violence and recognize Israel. Meanwhile, Mashaal issued a strong warning to Abbas, known by his nickname Abu Mazen, not to make political changes behind Hamas' back. "This is a message to Abu Mazen and other brothers in the authority to stop issuing decrees and decisions (before consulting us) ... as if to throw them in our face," Mashaal told journalists in Cairo. "We will not deal with them as legitimate ..Dell Inspiron 1521 battery no one can deceive us." The warning was a reaction to reports that Abbas would try to wrest control of security forces from a Hamas-led government. Palestinian papers reported Abbas planned to appoint his current Interior Minister Nasser Youssef as deputy commander of the Palestinian security forces. An official in Abbas' office denied the reports. Under Palestinian law, Abbas as president of the Palestinian Authority is responsible for foreign intelligence and national defense, while the yet-to-be-named prime minister is responsible for internal security, police and civil defense. Hamas also was upset when Palestinian Parliament speaker Rauhi Fattouh appointed Fatah Dell Inspiron 6000 batteryactivist Ibrahim Khreisheh as director general of the legislative council after last month's parliamentary election in which Hamas won 74 of the 132 seats. Abbas has said he will ask Hamas to form the new government. Saeb Erekat, a senior Fatah official, said it was "too early for Mr. Mashaal to jump to conclusions about various appointments." "We urge Hamas to accept the Arab peace plan of 2002 that calls for a two-state solution and to accept the Palestinian Authority's obligations and commitments and to put the interests of the Palestinian people before anything else," he told The Associated Press. Another top Hamas leader said earlier Wednesday that Jamal al-Khudairi, an independent legislator and businessman backed by Hamas, would be named Palestinian prime minister. Al-Khudairi Dell Inspiron 500m batterywas unanimously picked for the post in a Cairo meeting of Hamas leaders from Syria and from Gaza, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the group has not yet put the proposal to Abbas. Asked about the report, Mashaal said Hamas had not decided. "Al-Khudairi is a respected Palestinian personality," was all he said. Al-Khudairi, about 50, is board chairman of Gaza's Islamic University and owns the biggest mattress factory in the West Bank and Gaza. In his campaign speeches, he did not address violence or the recognition of Israel, but stuck to issues such as education and job training. He has, however, talked of the need for internal Palestinian reform. If al-Khudairi is not accepted in negotiations with Abbas or turns down the nomination, the group would nominate Palestinian Trade and Economics Minister Mazen Sonnoqrot, another independent with Hamas sympathies, the Hamas official said. When Italian explorer Marco Polo first called Hangzhou the greatest city in the world some 700 years ago, he could not have known how clear the waters of West Lake would become. disney dvd The transparency of the lake reached 60.07 centimetres on average in 2004. That means objects to a depth of about 60 centimetres are visible to the naked eye, according to a report from the West Lake Waters' Administration Division in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang Province. "The West Lake has witnessed the best water quality ever recorded in history and the transparency continues to rise," said Wu Zhiying, vice-director of the division. the tudors dvd Compared with 2003 and 2002, the average clearness of the water increased by 10.65 centimetres and 16.41 centimetres respectively, according to the report. The West Lake, covering 6.5 square kilometres, is the most important scenic spot in Hangzhou. Iat has been famous for thousands of years for its intoxicating beauty. It was originally a shallow sea inlet before it became a lake due to the laying down of silt. The increased transparency of this water wonderland is down to the success of a West Lake protection project, launched in 2003 by the local government to improve water quality, Wu said. About 400,000 cubic metres of recycled water is drawn from the Qiantang River into the lake each day, meaning the water is completely changed each month. 　smallville dvd "This provides a total volume of 120 million cubic metres of fresh water into the lake every year and the West Lake has become a flowing lake now," said Wu, adding that the water was changed yearly in the past. What is more, the self-purification ability of the lake has been greatly improved thanks to the "westward movement." That has reclaimed wetlands in the western part and enlarged the area of the lake from 5.6 square kilometres to 6.5 square kilometres, according to Wu. The average depth of the lake has increased from 1.65 metres to 2.27 metres with a volume of 14 million cubic metres, 40 per cent higher than before. Efforts have also been made on a waste discharge system to solve the problem of waste water being dumped in the lake by farmers living nearby, said Wu. Dell Inspiron 9300 battery To maintain a balanced ecosystem, more than 1 million plants - about 66 types in all - have been planted around the lake, making it a venue for birds such as wild ducks and cormorants. However, the hardest nut to crack is how to fully rehabilitate the ecosystem of the West Lake, Wu says. "There is still a long way for us to go to strike a balance between human and nature," Wu added. A 1,200-year-old village lies complete in the mountains of Central China. Shanggantang Village, 25 kilometres south of Jiangyong Town, Hunan Province, is home to 433 households, 1,865 people, almost all of whom belong to one ancestral family. 　Dell Inspiron 1526 battery Their ancestors, the Zhou family, allegedly travelled about 1,000 kilometres from Qingzhou in East China's Shandong Province to Hunan in the 9th century to avoid wars, and settled down in a small basin in the Gantang Mountain in 827 AD. Only seven households are not members of the original family, according to a 1,200-year-old family tree. The villagers have pledged to protect their traditions in today's overwhelming tide of globalization and modernization. So far they have preserved the buildings and lay-out of the village, which is surrounded by a small river. A mountain path leads to a 16-metre-tall wooden building called Wenchangge (House of the Learned), a landmark at the entrance of the village. The four-storey building has had five facelifts since it was completed at the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). 　Dell Latitude D520 battery To its east are four brick houses in the Ming style, with coloured paintings on parts of walls under upturned eaves. They are the remains of an ancient school, Lianxi Shuyuan (Lianxi Academy). Other houses at the village entrance, all of which are more than 300 years old, are the remains of a Buddhist temple and a Buddhist nunnery, where villagers used to worship the ancestors of the Zhou family as well as the Buddha. Small opera troupes that tour the area still perform on a 300-year-old stage, and a pavilion of roughly the same age shelters passers-by and villagers working in the fields nearby. Villagers say that for a millennium, people have been gathering at the patch of land at the village entrance on important occasions such as festival celebrations and ceremonies that are held to pay sacrifices to their common ancestors. Part of an ancient stone post road runs beside the House of the Learned. michael jackson dvd Before the 20th century, the village was an important hub on the road from Hunan to Southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said sources with the Hunan Cultural Heritage Administration. A walk north from the House of the Learned along the post road leads to a bridge over the river around the village. The bridge is called Buying (walk into a fairy island). Built in AD 1126, the stone bridge, 30 metres long and 4.5 metres wide, had four major renovations in 1135, 1278, 1468 and during the reign of the Emperor Qianlong (reign 1736-1796) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), says the book of the family tree, which also records the history of the village. 　Dell Latitude D500 battery The bridge has been badly damaged by flooding, revealing its structure of square rocks. It is also known as Duxian, or Immortal Crossing. Legend has it that when the bridge was completed, the villagers held a ceremony, attended by the immortal Tieguai Li, or Li the Iron Stick. As he stepped onto the bridge, half of it gave way beneath his iron stick. Today, villagers still like to tell the story to anyone interested. Villager Zhou Jiusheng said: "The villagers weren't happy. But Li the Iron Stick laughed. He said it was the will of Heaven. Every rock that had fallen from the bridge represented a top official from the village." As you walk across the bridge, you feel like you are stepping 800 years back into history. Altogether, 101 rocks fell from the bridge, and this is the number of officials above the rank of magistrate that have hailed from the village. Today's inhabitants of Shanggantang are the 48th generation of Zhous. Despite many changes of dynasty and constant warfare, the family has managed to maintain its lineage in the same village. The locals keep a "Portrait of 100 Officials," which includes 18 who served in the national capital and 11 scholars who won the title Jinshi, or the successful candidates in the highest imperial examinations for officialdom. 　Dell Inspiron E1505 battery For almost a century, one small rock in the bridge has seemed to be on the point of coming away. The villagers hope it will fall soon, because it will mean another great official will appear. Across the river lies a village filled with houses built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. This is a village typical of the ancient villages of the Yangtze River reaches in Central China, where there is limited land for farming and even less for buildings. It has more than 200 brick houses regularly arranged in a compact community. All the houses have two or three storeys. Their upturned eaves are decorated with earthenware sculptures and their white walls with carved wooden windows. At the southwestern corner of the village there is a mountain slope on which the Zhou family has carved its history. The 24 carvings on barren stones along the slope are all writings that record important events in the history of the family. 　Dell Inspiron E1705 battery Of them two were made in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), four in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), one in the Yuan (1271-1368), 11 in the Ming and others in the Qing. The most spectacular is a carving of four giant characters, 1.5 metres long and 1 metre wide each, written by Wen Tianxiang (1236-1282). Known for his literary achievements, Wen is primarily remembered as a hero and loyalist. The Prime Minister of the Southern Song regime led a losing war defending the regime against the invading Mongols and died as a martyr years later in captivity. Historical documents of the village said Wen sent one message with the four characters "zhong xiao lian jie" (loyalty, filial obedience, honesty, moral courage), to a member of the Zhou family named Deyuan, who was also a government official of the Southern Song regime. 　heroes dvd The Zhou family hid the piece after the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty and kept it as their motto. About four centuries after the fall of the Mongolian empire in 1368, they had the four characters carved on the stone to be remembered forever. The village is the only one known in Hunan Province that has in the past millennium had its history recorded in such a complete, detailed way and carved on a mountain slope, said sources with the provincial cultural heritage administration. Picture of simple joy There is only one way to get to Lugu Lake - drive. The lake is only about 270 kilometres away from the city Lijiang, but it takes some six hours to get there because of five mountains that have to be crossed, the tallest of which is about 4,000 metres above sea level. The road is mostly fine, but some sections are rougher than others. The road snakes around the mountains like a thin ribbon. Here and there, we passed through some small towns and villages, where the inhabitants still dress as they have always done, according to their ethnic styles, as they tend their sheep and cattle. The six-hour drive eventually brought us to the lake, in Luoshui Village. Here, the sky is clear and blue, reflected in the lake, which nestles among the green of the mountains like a hidden sapphire. The serenity has not escaped tourists, who come to be paddled across the water or led on horseback by villagers decked out in their festive costumes. The fiery-red headbands of the girls stand out, a practical adornment for sheltering from the sun's rays as well as looking colourful. It was already 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The sun was already slowly going down behind the mountains, the setting sun adding red to the blue of the water. 　angel dvd We joined the other tourists to catch a boat out on the lake to watch the full glory of the sunset. These traditional boats, called "pig trough" canoes because of how they look, have been used since time immemorial. In fact they are so old they have a legend about them. 　It is said that the grassland in the area was once completely flooded, and a woman feeding her pigs rescued her children by putting them in one of the troughs she used. Her children, a daughter and a son, survived. They were the ancestors of the Mosuo people and pig-trough canoes became the major means of transport on the lake. With the development of tourism, local residents around the lake have now embraced modernity, enjoying many of the electric appliances that make their lives comfortable. But they still eschew motor-driven boats because of the risk of pollution, local villagers told us. max headroom dvd Their words ring true - when you get to the middle of the lake, you can see about 10 metres down. Each canoe holds about 10 people. Two men row, a woman steers. "Have you seen the position of women? Men have to obey woman," said Dan Dong, our tour guide. Home visit And now for what we were really there for - to visit local families and find out more about this matriarchal system they swear is the best for them. Tourism has changed the community dramatically, with many people developing their homes into small hotels. One thing that has not changed is the zu wu, or grandmother's room. This is the sitting room, where the whole family gather around the fireplace each night to discuss family events and arrange the next day's work. Our hostess is 23-year-old Ake Naka. She invited us to visit her own zu wu. Before you enter, you must bow slightly in courtesy "to show our respect to our ancestors," said Naka. In the middle of the room, there is a square fireplace, with an iron rack for standing the kettle. On the desk in the front of the fire are the memorial tablets of the ancestors. sex and the city dvd "The fire must not die out for it represents the fortune of the family," she said. This fire, she claimed, had been lit for several generations. Naka said the fire was once used for cooking all the food, but modern times mean the family now has its own kitchen and they use it now simply for boiling water. There is a seating rule in Mosuo culture. The women, with the grandmother at the head, sit on the right of the fire, while the men, led by the eldest uncle, sit on the left. In front of the fire two wooden pillars represent the women on the right, the men on the left. When the children reach 13 years old, their families hold a cheng ding ceremony under one of the pillars according to their gender, to celebrate that they have become adults. The ceremony indicates that from then on, they are mature enough to choose their lovers and start "visiting marriages," or having sex. After cheng ding, girls will have their own separate bedrooms in the so-called "flower building." 　angel dvd The boys still live in zu wu with the grand family because in many cases they will not spend their nights at home, but with their lovers. The men must return to their own houses around dawn. This method of love-making is the most unique characteristic of the Mosuo culture. They are based on the feelings of the lovers, and once they fall out of love, bid farewell peacefully and find another suitable partner, said Naka. When a couple first fall in love, the boy visits the girl's family to obtain tacit approval from the grandmother before he can start sleeping with her. Dell Inspiron 6400 battery But Mosuo people choose their partners very carefully. They claim it is not as casual as outsiders assume. Our guide Naka, for example, has not yet slept with anyone and says she wants to wait until she finds the right one. A young couple are not supposed to bed a third person at one time - so love affairs should really end before new ones begin. This is necessary to maintain the good name of the family they belong to, and prevent sullying the names of their brothers and sisters. And they stick to it, because they know they have to bear the whole family in mind, not just themselves, said Naka. monk dvd The Mosuos believe that since this so-called "visiting marriage" system does not need registry, there is never any dispute over property, and the act is really a signal of their love. Some people do choose to register their marriages. 　Because the couples involved do not live together, the uncles of the mother's family play the role of father and help bring the children up. All the women in the mothers' family help take care of the child. Sometimes the child has difficulties knowing which is the real mother. If a woman does not have a child of her own, the whole family will support her when she gets old. Some people worry about ethics and blood relationships among the younger generation when they start sleeping around themselves. p90x But when each child is a month old, a grand party is held to celebrate who is the natural father. Mothers of all families will attend the gathering and are told the truth. The "visiting marriage" system could lead one to think the Mosuo people are very casual about sex. In fact, sex is very rarely talked about in public, especially in the presence of people of a different gender. And if tourists flirt, tempers could rise. As China has opened up, the Mosuo people have had more and more contact with outsiders. They are as eager to know about life beyond the mountains as the tourists are to know about their own lives. Some of the younger generation have left their traditional homes to try out the life outside, but many have returned after trying it for a few years. "The longer we stay outside, the more we cherish our Mosuo culture including the sleeping arrangements. We have no disputes over property or quarrels over love affairs, there is more happiness here and life is much simpler and easier," said Dan Dong, a 29-year-old Mosuo tourist guide who returned to Lijiang after eight years' studying and working in Guangzhou and Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong Province. Naka's elder sister is another example. She worked in Shenzhen for eight years, and then decided to go back to Lugu Lake. miami vice dvd Now, she is the "executive manager" of the extensive family because of her talent and experiences. She has a stable sleeping partner as a result of the "visiting marriages" and she already has a 4-year-old son. They have also allowed a few outsiders in - people who have fallen in love with the mountains and now settled here. The home visit over, we felt we had leaned a lot about the place and the people of Lugu Lake. We were blessed with a high moon that night, which turned the lake into a mirror. miami vice dvd The campfire crackled in the grand village hall, and young Mosuo girls and boys in festive costumes sang and danced with the tourists. Language differences did not seem to matter that night, and I could not help thinking that I too should return some day. Northeast China is becoming the ideal place for skiing and snowboard fans; the professional ski slopes are opening up early with the remarkable change in the weather. But there is more to expect on a visit to Jilin Province: the chance to watch Jilin in rime, considered to be one of the four Great Natural Wonders of China. The three others are the natural landscapes of Guilin, Yunnan's Stone Forests and the Three Gorges by the Yangtze River. family guy dvd Unique compared to the other three wonders is that the rime over the trees and lake is not apparent every moment of every day. Like the aurora borealis, it is dependent on the weather, time, and season. So on a trip to see the rime of Northeast China, take advantage of the patience and time to wander. The Songhua River, flowing through the city of Jilin, does not freeze in the severe cold, so the pines and willows along its banks are lined with fine luminescent water, a beautiful scene of ice lustres like crystal jade. The 550-square-kilometre Songhua Lake in southeast Jilin City is part of a national scenic resort, with water and monolithic mountains. The river and lake look exceptionally attractive, with shadow the only definitive that distinguishes the trees from its transparent icy cover. Weedy fence rows, cascading embankments and moist, open woodlands all lend their potential to be a frost-flower site. p90x The natural spectacle is usually found between November and January, the only time the condensed moisture can convert to water before freezing, with amorphous frost and glaze. Frost flowers form when moisture within the stem of a plant freezes. The embankments along the river and lake are the best place to pursue a myriad of frost-flowers in bloom. true blood dvd Only a few species of plants produce frost flowers, and, naturally, the formations never occur in exactly the same manner from one year to the next, let alone one night to the next. This is what makes finding them so special. Willow trees, pines and white crownbeards are excellent frost flower prospects. They only have a brief life span, so early morning is the best time to find them. The first rays of the sun soften their delicate edges and, well before noon, they melt away completely. Patience is a virtue. If you have to wait another day for the wonderment of rime, the snow paradise of Jilin City is full of interesting spectacles. Colourful ice lanterns decorate the streets, and fireworks light up the evening through frost-framed windows. The Jilin Rime and Snow-ice Festival has been held five times since 1991, usually held between December and late January. The festival opens the doors for economic and trade departments and enterprises to introduce themselves, discussing, showing, buying and selling all kinds of products and services. There is an ice sports complex in the centre of town. The city opens a tourist snow ground and ice entertainment arena on North Hill and Rosefinch Hill. Songhua Lake, Beida Lake and Lianhua Lake ski slopes are the best-equipped professional sites for skiing aficionados. 　dexter dvd Tens of thousands of people come here to ride sleds pulled by horses, dogs, and deer, to play and peruse when not on the slopes. Songhua Lake Ski resort, 24 km away from downtown Jilin is now open to skiers, from late November to next April. The Beida Lake Resort, 56 km away from downtown Jilin, is a centre for sports and tourism that provides contests, training, tourist and aerobic activities. If you have enough time, we strongly suggest staying one or two days in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, 60 km from Jilin city centre. Local guides recommend seeing the Puppet State Imperial Palace and Motion Picture City. dexter dvd Changchun used to be the capital of the puppet "Manchukuo State," rigged by Japanese invaders. During his 1932-1945 tenure as a bogus emperor, Aisin Gioro Pu Yi has left his legacy there, including his imperial palace, the puppet state council building, with many other large buildings emulating the style. The well-known Changchun Film Studio, where many outstanding movies have been made, lures visitors with a series of tourist and recreational programmes related to the motion picture industry. It also contains Asia's largest indoor film studio. p90x Getting there: Flights are available from Beijing to Jilin City (eight flights from 8:10 am - 9 pm every day). Songhua Lake is near downtown, and easy to walk to see the rimed landscape in the morning. To reach the Beida Lake Ski Slopes, taking a taxi is the easiest way, a 40-minute ride that will cost around 100 yuan (US$12). Songhua Lake Ski Resort is closer. There is a direct shuttle bus from the long-distance bus station. The journey takes about 70 minutes, and costs 3 yuan (US$0.36 ). mad men dvd Mianshan, a site with Buddhist and Taoist history tracing back 2,500 years, has become an amazing travel destination after opening to the public in 2000. Almost 800 kilometres southwest of Beijing, and 20 kilometres west of Jiexiu City, Mianshan is reminisce as a holy place for both Buddhism and Taoism. Rebuilt religious buildings rest harmoniously in caverns opposite sheer mountains and plush vegetation. History began with the legendary 'BurningDell Inspiron 510m battery of Mianshan,'during the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC). Jie Zitui, the legend's hero, was a loyal follower of Wengong, King of Jin Kingdom, even after his monarch was exiled. His loyalty was proclaimed by offerring a roasted piece of flesh from his leg to feed the starving king. On being restored to the throne, the King forgot Jie's devotion. Together with his mother, he moved to Mianshan. When the king heard the news, he was ashamed and regretful. He travelled to Mianshan to invite Jie back, only to find the door locked. Neighbours said that Jie was not willing to become an official, and had climbed up the ridge of the mountain, carrying his mother on his back. The mountains of Mianshan are very high, with dangerous terrain and dense forests. It would not be easy to look for Jie and his mother. Someone suggested to set fire to the mountains and force Jie out. gossip girl dvd The king agreed, spreading a fire across three sides of the mountain. The fire burned all flora and fauna, yet not a shadow of Jie was found. After the fire dispersed, however, people found the remains of Jie, sitting under an old willow tree, with his mother on his back. 　csi dvd Seeing this, the king felt unbearable pain. On his return, the king made it known all over the country that the day after Cold Food Day was fixed as the Pure Brightness Festival, in commemoration of Jie. The festival (also named the Qingming Festival) and its customs have been handed down from generation to generation and is still followed today. Since that time, many buildings were built in Mianshan's steep slopes until 1940, when the Japanese army came and burnt most of the religious buildings and relics, causing the mountain to lose its allure for over the next 50 years. Dell Inspiron 1501 battery Covering about 200 square kilometres, the mountain has been rejuvenated, once again filled with many scenic spots, providing a home for 88 temples and over 20 grand halls. The highest temple is more than 2,000 metres above sea level. Apart from Mianshan, tourists are also recommended to tour Zishou Temple and Wang's Courtyard. The following is an itinerary for a four-day trip to see these creations. Day 1: Start at Beijing West Railway Station with an overnight train. There are many train routes that arrive at Jiexiu City, a 9 to 11 hour train ride away. Driving is faster, taking less than eight hours. The train ticket costs about 200 yuan (US$24) for a soft sleeper. After reaching Jiexiu, many tourist buses are available to take you 24km south to Mianshan. star trek voyager dvd There are five three- and four-star hotels to choose from. Almost all overhang the cliff. Pick a room with a view to watch the remote mountain scenery. Yunfeng Shuyuan Hotel and Wolong Hotel are two we recommend. They are situated near the many Taoist and Buddhist temples and scenic spots. After breakfast, visit Dragon Head Temple and Yunfeng Temple, with other sites not too far away. While they are close, the steps to reach them are arduous. Take a break on the many picnic tables on the path. Bring your favourite snacks with you and take your time. The views and temples are stunning. After reaching such incredible heights, one is in no rush to return. G5260 Day 2: Visit Daluo Temple, Zhujia'ao, Yidouquan, and other nearby sites. Daluo Temple is called the "first Taoist temple in the world." There is no detail about when the old temple was first built. Since ancient times, the temple has always been crowded by pilgrims. It was renovated in 1998. p90x Day 3: Visit Qixia Valley, the Temple and Tomb of Jie Zitui, and Shuitaogou (Water Wave Valley). Qixia Valley is very precipitous. Man-made wooden steps and scaling ladders are built along cliffs to walk over the running stream. Take the mountain path from the top of Qixia Valley to Jie Zitui's Tomb. Many visitors fail to go because there are more than 1,000 steep steps to complete the journey, but it is well worth the effort. A day spent here is not wasted. The locals who rest here with a ready smile are testimony to the peace one can achieve by listening to the silence while resting on the terra-covered plateau. Food and water are essential as part of the walk. Stone benches are available along both sides of the tiled square surface. Water Waves Valley attracts a myriad of visitors thanks to its array of waterfalls, some with caves hidden behind the waterfall's stream. The valley is about four kilometres in length. 　lost dvd Day 4: Leave Mianshan in the morning for Zishou Temple and Wang's Courtyard. The two sites are on the way to Jiexiu train station. Zishou Temple boasts 1,300 years of history. It is a Buddhist temple, where ancient architecture, Buddha, and pine trees still remain. Wang's Courtyard is incredible. It would take a long story to detail the 45,000 square metres of Ming's folk group residence. Cost for accommodation: The hotels in Mianshan range from 150 yuan (US$18) to 300 yuan (US$36) per day. Entrance: Tickets to different scenic spots in Mianshan range from 20 yuan (US$2.5) to 30 yuan (US$3.5). Ticket to Wang's Courtyard are 40 yuan per person. The last train to leave Jiexiu for Beijing is reasonably early, so be sure to give yourself time to get there for your return. Most train routes from Hancheng, Yuncheng and other cities to Beijing arrive at Jiexiu between 7 pm to 9 pm.the beatles dvd CCTV's recent live broadcasts from Dunhuang's grottoes may be the first time Chinese media have focused on these mysterious marvels.law and order dvd The programmes, shown October 22 to 24, showed more than 10 grottoes that had never before been exposed to public view. Dunhuang is located in Southwest China's Gansu Province. The ancient Silk Road passed through the area, after traversing the Gansu Corridor. Dunhuang's greatest significance lies in its unique grottoes, located among a wilderness of yellow sands. Researchers say there are 735 grottoes in all, with the Mogao Grottoes providing a representative example. These caves were cut into a cliff 25 kilometres southeast of Dunhuang, part of Mingsha Mountain. 　Dell Inspiron 1520 battery Over a period of approximately 1,000 years, beginning in AD 366, these stone caves were excavated in the area of Dunhuang, eventually forming a 1,680-metre-long south-north complex. Dunhuang art reached its zenith during the Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) dynasties. It adopted Chinese delineation and Western patch colouring, creating depictions of human expressions that were remarkably life-like and elegant.zumba Dancing images, such as those of flying deities, were especially brilliantly executed, captivating all who have seen them. Ravages of time Unfortunately these beautiful images suffered great damage over the course of their long history, with some of them even removed and scattered around the world. The beginning of the 20th century was the climax of the most shameful period in the Chinese history. In May 1900, the Eight-power Allied Forces intruded into Beijing, the capital of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Yet it was during this period of chaos that a Taoist priest called Wang Yuanlu accidentally stumbled upon the sacred Buddhist site of Dunhuang. Wang had served in the army before converting to Taoism. Astounded by the site, Wang hired a man surnamed Yang to transcribe the writings found on the murals. In 1900, the torch in Yang's hand illuminated an extraordinary and historic discovery - a small cave containing thousands of preserved ancient sutra scrolls, paintings and sculptures. At the time, Chinese officials took little interest in the Dunhuang treasures. In February 1906, Marc Aurel Stein, a Jewish employee of the British Government, came to China and - learning of Wang's find - rushed to Dunhuang. To his disappointment, he found Wang was personally difficult to deal with.disney dvd When Stein was finally allowed into the sutra cave, he was overcome with awe. He described the experience in his book "Travels in West Asia" in the following terms: "When I looked in through a small hole, my eyes opened wide in surprise." By the dim light of Wang's candle, ancient sutra scrolls could be seen heaped up in piles several metres high, over scores of square metres. During the next seven days, Stein rummaged among them. These ancient scrolls and beautiful frescoes, he said, far exceeded any discovery he had made before. He left the cave with 3,000 sutra scrolls and 500 paintings packed in 29 huge wooden boxes, paying for the treasures with a relatively small amount of silver. 　RN873 Sixteen months later, when the boxes arrived at the British Museum in London, the whole of Europe was astounded. Stein's discovery was viewed as one of the greatest findings of the 20th century. The collection from Dunhuang in the British Museum sheds light on many different subjects. The documents in Chinese and minority languages such as Sanskrit cover almost all aspects of society: medicine, military affairs, literature, performing arts, the closer dvdarithmetic, calligraphy and legal transactions. Other Western nations soon turned their eyes to Dunhuang, and explorers from France, Japan, Russia and the US rushed to the isolated site. Dell Inspiron 1721 battery A French explorer, Paul Pelliot, recorded his experience in his diary: "It is a holiday today. I remained in the cave for a dozen hours without interruption, my excitement unabated." Langdon Warner, an American, hurried to Dunhuang in 1924. He removed 26 of the best frescoes, as well as several coloured statues. Warner took 6,000 valuable pieces from Dunhuang to Paris in 1908. Meanwhile, Pelliot proudly showed off his acquisitions in Beijing, arousing the attention of the Qing Government. Looting continued in Dunhuang until 1909, when the Qing Government finally issued instructions that all remaining sutra scrolls be shipped to Beijing. However, along the way, thefts happened frequently. Out of 40,000 scrolls removed from the complex, only 8,697 arrived safely in Beijing. The Fogg Art Museum in Harvard University still has parts of the murals that were removed by Warner. Due to air-raids during World War II, those Dunhuang pieces which had been taken to Japan were scattered among private collections for safety, two and a half men dvdmaking them very hard to trace. The number of pieces from Dunhuang now strewn about the world is now unknown. Furthermore, due to continuing weathering from desert winds, the caves themselves might collapse at any time. Villagers have sheltered their livestock in the Mogao Grottoes and set bonfires in them for cooking. With Chinese society becoming more stable, Dunhuang's protection had taken on the status of an important national project. In 1943, the Dunhuang Art Institute was established and Chang Shuhong, an overseas student from Paris, was appointed to the job of preserving the site, a goal to which he remained devoted throughout his life. Others following in his footsteps, included Duan Wenjie, Fan Jinshi and other scholars. Together they persevered in the task Chang had begun. Since the Mogao Grottoes were first opened to the public in 1979, about 4 million visitors from over 80 countries and regions have come to marvel at the site. The number of visitors has risen particularly steeply in recent years, and it is estimated that Dell Inspiron E1405 battery 30,000 visitors now come to see the grottoes every year, a number that is expected to rise still further over the next decade. Li Zuixiong, deputy president of the institute, said restrictions would be placed on access to the site in order to preserve the priceless treasures. Due to the warmth and vapour introduced by visitors, the frescoes could be damaged by excessive contact. In addition, lack of awareness among visitors made further education necessary: monitoring by the institute showed about 3.9 per cent of the 18,212 visitors actually touched the frescoes. Since April 2003, the institute has initiated an advanced booking scheme designed to control the number of visitors. A "virtual Dunhuang" system, allowing people to enjoy the art through audio-visual simulation using digital technology, is also being created. 　Dell Latitude D830 battery Suzhou, an ancient city in East China's Jiangsu Province, has again attracted world attention, having been chosen as the host city for the 28th session of the World Heritage Committee, which will be held from June 28 to July 7. Popularly referred to as a "paradise on earth" in ancient times, Suzhou is most famous for its classic gardens. Nine gardens in Suzhou are included on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List. And Suzhou's Kunqu Opera was also classed as a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO in 2001. But Suzhou has much more to offer than its beautiful gardens and marvelous Kunqu Opera. The fabric of the city's history is resplendent with its many strands of local history and culture. Suzhou people trace their history back to the end of the Shang Dynasty around 1100 BC. When Taibo, together with his brother Zhongyong, both princes of Zhou, fled from China's northwest to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, they were elected as leaders of the local people, laying the foundation of the ancient Gou-Wu State. That is why Suzhou was originally called Wu. 　Dell Latitude D820 battery In 514 BC, Wu Zixu, the prime minister of King Helu, supervised the re-construction of Suzhou, and that marked the beginning of today's city. The city, at that time a town, was called Helu. It had a circumference of 23.5 kilometres, with walls and a moat and eight gates, traces of which can still be found today. Through its history, Suzhou has seen many changes, including its name. The present name was adopted in AD 589 during the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618). But it has remained at the same site and retained its original construction for more than 2,500 years. With its grid structure of roads and waterways, ancient Suzhou used to be one of the largest cities in China. Records indicate that its main avenue was 45 metres wide, and its main canal 38 metres wide. 　Y9943 The Pingjiang Map, inscribed on a stone tablet that dates back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279), preserved the layout of the then Suzhou in an accurate and artistic way. A square window in a Suzhou garden turns the outside view into a picture. On the map, city walls, government offices, markets, rivers, bridges, Buddhist pagodas, temples, pavilions, granaries, military camps, towers, gardens and lakes can all be identified. Even scenic spots outside the city are included on the map. It might be the world's earliest urban street map. Comparing the map surveyed with remote sensors today with the Pingjiang Map, it can be seen that Suzhou's layout at that time was essentially the same as it is today. The city is water-oriented, with the Yangtze River to its north, Taihu Lake to the west and the Grand Canal going through it. Its broad network of waterways greatly contributed to its development as an economic centre. By the Jiaqing reign (1796-1820) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the population in Suzhou had reached 6 million. Silk-weavingfriends dvd a painting of a Kunqu Opera performance from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The imperial governments of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) established the Silk-Weaving Bureau in Suzhou to supervise the production of textiles which were used by the imperial family and exported to foreign countries as far away as Europe, Africa and the Americas. Suzhou people also developed their own style of exquisite embroidery, which is lauded as a "pearl of oriental art" for its beautiful designs, varied stitches, superb workmanship and elegant colours. Early in the Song Dynasty, Suzhou embroidery was already well known for its delicate and close stitching and meticulous and wondrous use of colours. In the Qing Dynasty, Suzhou embroidery reached a highpoint in its prosperity, with embroidery markets flourishing throughout the city. Centre of fashiongrey's anatomy dvd With the development of the local economy and the people's great cultural accomplishment, Suzhou became one of the country's fashion leaders. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, women nationwide followed closely the dressing styles of the women of Suzhou. The glamour of the soft-spoken local dialect attracted people to adopt a Suzhou accent. Even as far back as the Sui Dynasty Emperor Suiyang used to practise speaking the Suzhou dialect. And the local ballads, featuring the sweetest melodies in all of China, were widely circulated and sung. The city was the nation's cultural centre as well, and generations of people born in Suzhou have helped write the splendid history of the nation. Kunqu and its legacy 8N544 Kunqu Opera is seen as one of the most splendid cultural creations of the Chinese people. With its roots in the folk songs of the mid 14th century, Kunqu Opera was refined over a period of nearly 200 years to stand out prominently among all the schools of opera in China. In 2001, UNESCO listed Kunqu as a "Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage." Kunqu Opera is a comprehensive performance art involving literature, music, dance, acting, costumes, make-up, props and sets: namely, everything theatrical. Its cultural heritage value is embodied in this comprehensive scope, including its unique singing style. The subject matter for the operas comes from a wide reservoir of resources, integrating all the refined performance techniques and set tunes of northern and southern songs and operas of many dynasties. The huge library of scripts is another valuable treasure of Kunqu Opera. The contents cover all periods of Chinese history. The most famous scripts currently staged, include "Romance of the West Chamber" (Xixiang Ji) from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), "Peony Pavilion" grey's anatomy dvd(Mudan Ting) from the Ming Dynasty, and "Longevity Hall" (Changsheng Dian) and "Peach Blossom Fan" (Taohua Shan) from the Qing Dynasty. Another feature of Kunqu Opera is its equal emphasis on singing and acting. Centre of learning During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Suzhou already had between 700 and 800 schools and dozens of academies. These institutions of learning helped to nurture not only generations of talented personages in all areas of life, but also a great number of zhuangyuan, the people who got the top scores during exams held in the presence of the emperor for administrative posts.south park dvd Throughout history, there have been 50 zhuangyuan from Suzhou, of whom, 45 were selected for their scholarship and five for their martial abilities. Aside from zhuangyuan, there were more who have come down in history as great masters of literature and the arts, although they didn't attend or win high places in the imperial exams. For example, the Wu school of painting and calligraphy of Suzhou is famous nationwide. Its main representatives are Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin and Qiu Ying of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). This academic and artistic legacy has continued. Local people are proud of the fact that 86 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering come from Suzhou. I. M. Pei, a world-celebrated masterbattlestar galactica dvd architect, Shi Min, famous micro-electronics specialist, Wu Jianxiong, physicist, Nobel laureates Lee Tsung-Dao and Steve Chu are all part of the pride of Suzhou. For thousands of years, Suzhou people have used their wit and energy to keep the city in the educational, artistic and cultural forefront. Buddhism and Daoism reached the Wu area at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 25-220), and as a result, numerous temples have been built in and around the city. 　Traces of religion from the past are seen today in the ancient pagodas, most of which have a very long history: The pagoda on Tiger Hill was built in AD 601 in the Sui Dynasty; Ruiguang pagoda was first built during the period of the Three Kingdoms (AD 220-280) criminal minds dvdand rebuilt in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 906-1127); Beisi pagoda was originally constructed in the Liang Dynasty (AD 502-557) and was repaired between 1078-1085; the Twins pagodas were first built in 982; the Buddhist temple on Lingyan Mountain was originally built in the Liang Dynasty and renovated in 1989. Recently, a book entitled "Gateway to Suzhou" was published to provide a thorough introduction to Suzhou for people attending the upcoming session of the World Heritage Committee. 　C1295 The book is a collaborative production of Suzhou Celebrity Studies of China and the Culture and Art Publishing House. Experts in Kunqu Opera, ancient architecture, and art and literature took part in its compilation. Famous photographer Shao Hua contributed the pictures. The book may well lead you to visit Suzhou to taste and feel the city's unique cultural atmosphere first-hand. Since life for most is no longer a daily struggle for basic necessities to meet physical needs, topics of public discourse are beginning to touch on aspects of life we have seldom addressed before. You may have noticed the Chinese press giving recent attention to literature that addresses happiness.clint eastwood dvd Most, if not all, Chinese are financially better off thanks to 28 years of reform and opening up. But are we any happier? Various surveys and rankings attempt to answer this question. The municipal government of Beijing even unveiled a plan last month to incorporate residents' levels of satisfaction as an important indicator of societal harmony. The limelight on subjective well-being adds D5318a precious human touch to our pursuit of development. 75UYF Though sociologists have presented varying percentages based on different criteria, their answers tend to find we are generally happier, and the number of optimists rises each year. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' 2006 Blue Book on social progress says 70 per cent of rural and urban respondents surveyed in 2005 reported a feeling of happiness and were optimistic about their futures. But each survey reveals a worrisome fact that a sizable portion, 10 per cent at the lowest, of respondents were not content with their lives or not hopeful about the future. We canot be content with the fact that at least 130 million of our countrymen are not happy. When discussing reasons forthe golden girls dvd discontent, the law of diminishing utility is relevant. Following this logic, insatiable desires are to blame. It makes ense: When you have everything you need for a decent life, and more of the things you want, you may want more. But for the majority of Chinese citizens, it is not about diminishing utility. Though the official number of those in abject poverty is small, many more are yet to rise above the difficult fight for subsistence. Although a sense of happiness remains zumbaa luxury for many of our compatriots because of poverty, we agree financial well-being is not the sole determinant of happiness For most of us, except the extremely rich and naturally born optimists, there simply are too many variables that may kill the feeling of happiness. These include, but are not limited to, rising housing prices, tight and instable job market, back-breaking schooling expenses and medical bills. The most common one, however, is a low sense of security. An eye-catching characteristic of our economy is its high savings rate, at 46 per cent now. Dell Latitude D800 battery Cultural factors aside, as People's Bank of China President Zhou Xiaochuan told the World Economic Forum, the country's incomplete social security system is a major reason for the public's reluctance to spend. Explaining the rise in savings and drop in spending in their city, Beijing municipal statisticians pointed to unfavourable expectations in the low- and middle-income group there was too much uncertainty regarding employment, income, housing, medical situations, and education. 6Y270 How can you feel happy when you always have to brace yourself for the unexpected? It may be beyond the government's reach, not to mention obligation, to guarantee higher income for every citizen. But it does have a burden to create an environment where all citizens can feel a reasonable level of security. 　Dell Latitude D620 battery There was an inclusive "safety network" when the government encouraged officials to leave public offices in 1980s in attempts to downsize public service. The idea was to offer officials secure pay and benefits so they would not have to worry about guarantees after their departure from positions of power. It is time the government displayed similar creativity and resolve to address a much larger sense of uncertainty. China shipping giant China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) is in talks to own part of a major Greek port giving it increased access to European markets. Company officials said COSCO Hellas, the beatles dvd the firm's subsidiary in Greece, is interested in taking part in possible plans to buy shares in the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA). 　Dell Inspiron 1300 battery So said an official surnamed Chen at COSCO's port operations department. PPA handles almost 60 per cent of all Greek shipping. Chen said COSCO President Wei Jiafu discussed port investment when he met Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis in January, who was on an official visit to China. Chen would not give further details as talks are in the initial stages. The chance to buy into ports was created with the privatization of significant ports in Greece, including Piraeus. The Greek Government owns 74.1 per cent of PPA at the moment. The Thessalonica Port Authority said COSCO Hellas has also expressed an interest in developing co-operative ties with the northern Greek port. Another firm, China Shipping Group (CSG) China's second-largest shipping company is seeking facilities in the Greek port of Crete. COSCO President Wei Jiafu said earlier that port investment is a priority for the company's future expansion. 　Dell Latitude D600 battery In December the group was involved in a joint venture formed by AP Moeller-Maersk and Hutchison Whampoa to buy and develop the second phase of Shanghai's Yangshan port. COSCO Pacific, a port investor affiliated to the Group, took 10 per cent of the venture. In December, the group also signed an agreement to buy a 20 per cent stake in the Suez Canal Container Terminal in Egypt, its first port investment in the Middle East. COSCO now holds stakes in a number of Chinese ports in the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and the Bohai Rim in northern China. curb your enthusiasm dvd Outside of China, it has a 49 per cent stake in a terminal in Singapore, a 25 per cent stake in Belgium's Antwerp port and stakes in other ports in the United States. COSCO is expected to register a pre-tax profit of around 20 billion yuan (US$2.5 billion) in 2005, breaking all past records, said Chen.
